First View Movie Review
Black Panther

This review is going to be
very short and simple because there was so much to Black Panther,
that only after one viewing, it can hardly all be encapsulated except
for the definitive statement that this movie was incredibly good, not
just for another addition in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) but
also just as a movie in general, not even considering it's cultural
significance and impact.
This movie, with a run time
of two hours and fifteen minutes, is very well paced and edited,
making one shocked as they leave the theater, check the clock, and
realize how fast it went by. The cinematography is breathtakingly
gorgeous, stunning visual colors and scenery, primarily set in the
fictional country of Wakanda, in the real continent of Africa. The
setting, though fictional, was fully realized, had depth, layers,
and felt unique, mystical, and real all at the same time, made only
more so by the three-dimensional characters inhabiting it. The main
character, the Black Panther, is King T'Challa, played by Chadwick
Boseman, and he must struggle with being a leader of his country and
helping save the world as a superhero, while being faced with the
antagonist, Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan. The entire cast
is talented and each character is their own, with likes, dislikes,
traits, habits, goals and objectives. The film is well-structured
with a strong story hinging upon its solid characters, being a mix of
action-superhero, political thriller, and genuine comedic beats
sprinkled in to help balance the tension. The movie was also bold,
asking serious questions and challenging its audience through the
idealistic differences between the protagonist and antagonist. All
together, there is nothing quite like Black Panther; even
though it is one of the Marvel movies, it stands on its own.
Black Panther has
several layers to uncover and dive through, which adds to making it a
movie worth seeing more than once. It is not necessarily a perfect
movie, the third-act was perhaps more like a typical superhero film,
but the pros outweigh all the cons by far. Highly recommend this
movie to anyone thirteen and up (it's a bit much for younger
audiences, dealing with politics, family drama, racial issues).
Regardless if you're a Marvel fan or not, it's an enjoyable movie
that stands on its own but also adds to the overall MCU. It will
likely be up there with Wonder Woman as an incredibly great
superhero film that depends the genre and impacts society.
For a superhero film, after
a first viewing, I give it 5/5 stars. Highly recommend!
