Behind the Skit – Date Night

Something that always keeps things interesting at the studio is the constant improv. In other words, all the goofing off.

Playing around and being silly is one of the main things the crew do during their weekly meetings. I mean, we are Christian home-schoolers, what do you expect?

Many of the short skits we produce and publish for the channel are born out of a goofy idea, turned into an improved skit, which is then lightly practiced, smoothed out, and filmed within a couple hours. This doesn't always result in the most brilliant or perfect products, but we're always guaranteed a good time while filming.

In the case with “Date Night” it was a little different. A year ago, in the summer of 2017, the crew had been gathered together at a filming-location to shoot scenes for Making a Short Film. At the end of the shooting, as a few people were waiting for rides, they naturally began goofing off and chasing one another. And then, the goofing off turned into one of those improv moments.

Gigi and Eugene Anthony were seated in a car, pretending to be at a drive-in movie theater, watching an old movie. Then, Christi K. popped up from behind them, except she's an alien from another planet. It takes a few minutes before Gigi and Eugene finally realize there's an alien in their vehicle, which prompts the chase scene. This idea was hoped to turn into a skit one day.

Fast forward a whole year later, summer of 2018. The crew is at one of their weekly meetings, trying to come up with a skit idea to film. Then, Z Factor remembers that one idea. Except, they can't go to a drive-in theater, and they have no make-up for Christi to look like an alien. A light-bulb moment went off in her head as they were improving the same skit once more.

Instead of a car, what if it was a couch? And instead of an alien, perhaps a burglar? Brilliant! Christi K. was replaced with Meyer, and the scene was set and staged. Then, even more ideas. What if the burglar was Gigi's ex-boyfriend? Oh, the drama! Filming went under way immediately.

While editing, Z Factor remembered that her parents' wedding anniversary was the upcoming Sunday. And so, she decided to dedicate this “romantic” skit in their honor.

It's fun to see crazy ideas turn into something fun, and hopefully you enjoyed the skit as much as the crew enjoyed putting it together!
